Le Le, the giant panda cub born in Singapore, arrived safely at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport on January 16, 2024. This significant move marks the beginning of a new chapter in Le Le’s life as he joins China’s giant panda conservation program.
Preparing for the Journey
Before his flight, Le Le underwent the first stage of mandatory quarantine at River Wonders in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve. His journey to China was carefully planned and executed, with Le Le traveling in a custom-designed crate to ensure his comfort and safety. The crate was loaded onto a Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft, specially arranged for his transportation.
Onboard Care
Accompanying Le Le on his flight were his keeper and veterinarian from Mandai Wildlife Group, as well as a keeper from China. Throughout the journey, Le Le was well-fed and checked on regularly, maintaining a good appetite. The aircraft’s cabin temperature was kept between 12°C and 16°C, and the flight crew took measures to ensure a smooth journey, avoiding turbulence and ensuring slow takeoff and landing.
Second Round of Quarantine
Upon arrival in Chengdu, Le Le began his second round of quarantine at the Huaying Mountain Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center in Guang’an, Sichuan province. During this period, his health and well-being are closely monitored to determine the most suitable permanent residence for him post-quarantine.
Emotional Farewell
The departure was an emotional event, witnessed by various dignitaries and officials from Singapore and China. Le Le’s journey was not just a logistical endeavor but also a significant event symbolizing the collaboration between Singapore and China in wildlife conservation.
Le Le’s transition to China is a critical step in the global efforts to conserve the giant panda species. His arrival in Chengdu represents not only a new beginning for him but also a continuation of the important work in panda conservation and research.
