Singapore’s Muslim community is set to begin the observance of Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting, on Tuesday, March 12. The commencement of Ramadan is traditionally determined by the sighting of the new moon, which is in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar.
The Mufti of Singapore, Dr. Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, made the announcement, explaining that based on astronomical projections, the crescent moon marking the start of Ramadan is not expected to be visible from Singapore on the evening of Sunday due to its minimal size and the specific criteria for moon sighting not being met as per the standards of the MABIMS countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore).
Dr. Nasir further clarified that Monday would complete the 30th day of Syaaban, the month preceding Ramadan, thus officially marking Tuesday as the first day of fasting.
In his message, the Mufti extended his best wishes to all Muslims in Singapore for a fulfilling Ramadan. “I wish all Muslims in Singapore a blessed Ramadan. Let’s embrace our fasts and worship with deep gratitude and excellence,” he stated.
