In a startling incident, Rafique Syed Hariza Ali Hussain, 40, stands accused of illegally exporting a staggering 5,160 red-eared terrapins from Singapore to India. The operation, which took place on November 7, 2023, involved the terrapins being clandestinely packed into the accused’s personal luggage for the journey from Changi Airport to Coimbatore International Airport in Tamil Nadu.

Rafique faces serious legal repercussions under both the Wildlife Act and the Animals and Birds Act. The charges highlight the alleged lack of ventilation for the terrapins during their transportation, pointing to unnecessary suffering inflicted upon the animals. If found guilty, Rafique could face up to a year in jail, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both for each charge, with potential for doubled penalties due to the amalgamated nature of the charges.

The Plight of the Terrapins

The red-eared sliders, recognized as wildlife under Singapore’s laws, endured poor conditions throughout their illicit journey. This case shines a light on the darker aspects of wildlife trade and the need for stringent measures to protect vulnerable species from such inhumane treatment and exploitation.
