The Yishun Pond Water Crisis and Its Impact on Aquatic Life

In a recent turn of events, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) has identified an “unusually low” water level in a pond previously part of Orto leisure park in Yishun as the culprit behind a distressing fish mortality incident. This anomaly, first noticed last Friday, prompted immediate action from the HDB, leading to the removal of deceased fish and the relocation of survivors to ensure their safety.

The Cause Unveiled

A video capturing the dire situation surfaced on social media, showcasing fish in a desperate struggle for oxygen, with several already succumbed and floating atop the water’s surface. The HDB, upon investigation, traced the root of the problem to a significant water level drop in the pond, an occurrence that was unprecedented since the site’s takeover for soil investigation and survey works.

Swift Response and Future Measures

In light of this unforeseen event, the HDB has undertaken measures to mitigate the impact, including the transfer of live fish to a safer, smaller holding pond within the same vicinity. The usual practice of replenishing the pond water every two days, whenever levels dipped below normal, was highlighted as part of the regular maintenance routine. Yet, the sudden drop in water levels presented a challenge that the existing protocols could not preempt.

Looking ahead, the HDB has identified a suitable commercial farm as a new habitat for the remaining fish, with plans to complete the relocation by the end of February. This proactive step is part of broader efforts to prepare the site for impending development works slated to commence in the first quarter of 2024.

As investigations into the cause of the water level drop continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance required in managing urban aquatic environments. The HDB’s prompt response and the community’s engagement underscore the collective responsibility toward ensuring the well-being of our urban wildlife.
