Super Typhoon Yagi Devastates Multiple Countries
Super Typhoon Yagi, Asia’s strongest storm this year, has wreaked havoc across several countries, including China’s Hainan Island, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The deadly storm has claimed the lives of at least 22 people, caused mass evacuations, and led to significant destruction as it made its way through the region.
Two Dead and 1 Million Displaced in Hainan
Yagi first made landfall in China’s Hainan Island, where it killed two people and forced the evacuation of over 1 million residents. The storm brought with it violent winds and torrential rains, which caused widespread power outages affecting more than 800,000 homes. Local authorities were quick to implement emergency measures, but the extent of the damage has been severe.
Yagi Continues Path of Destruction to Vietnam
After battering Hainan, Yagi moved toward northern Vietnam, where the typhoon intensified. The Vietnamese government reported that four people were killed and 78 others injured as the storm hit island districts in the north of the country. At least a dozen people remain missing at sea, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations. Yagi’s fierce winds and rain have severely damaged infrastructure and disrupted daily life in the affected regions.
Philippines Suffers Heavy Losses
Prior to striking Hainan and Vietnam, Super Typhoon Yagi made its first landfall in the Philippines earlier in the week. The storm devastated several areas, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 people. Communities were left struggling to recover as rescue teams worked to address the storm’s aftermath, including widespread flooding and damage to homes and infrastructure.
