A series of wildfires have erupted across southeastern South Korea, resulting in four fatalities and prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents. The fires, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, have led the government to declare a state of emergency in the affected regions.
Casualties and Evacuations
The wildfires have claimed the lives of three firefighters and one public servant, who were involved in combating the blaze in Sancheong County, South Gyeongsang Province. Approximately 260 residents from this area have been evacuated to temporary shelters as flames encroached upon residential zones.
In Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province, over 400 individuals have been evacuated due to advancing fires. Additional evacuations have occurred in the city of Gimhae, reflecting the widespread impact of the wildfires.
Scale and Response Efforts
As of Saturday evening, the Sancheong wildfire had consumed more than 500 hectares (1,200 acres) of land. Efforts to contain the blaze have been hampered by the region’s mountainous terrain and persistent strong winds, with only 35% of the fire under control despite the deployment of nearly 1,600 emergency workers, 35 helicopters, and numerous vehicles.
The fires have also led to the closure of several highway sections in the southeast, including routes connecting Ulsan and Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city.
Government Actions
In response to the extensive damage caused by simultaneous wildfires, the Interior Ministry has declared a state of emergency in Ulsan and the North and South Gyeongsang provinces. The Korea Forest Service has issued “severe” fire warnings—the highest level—in 12 locations, including major population centers such as Busan and Daejeon.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok has directed all relevant agencies to “mobilize all available equipment and personnel to quickly extinguish” the fires, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The wildfires continue to pose significant challenges to firefighting efforts due to unfavorable weather conditions and difficult terrain. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents in affected areas to adhere to evacuation orders and safety guidelines.
