In a groundbreaking endeavor, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) alongside Fortescue, an Australian enterprise, successfully executed the world’s inaugural trial of ammonia as a marine fuel. This landmark trial was carried out on the Singapore-flagged Fortescue Green Pioneer.

Ammonia Fueling Innovation

Sourced from an existing ammonia production facility, the liquid ammonia was loaded onto the dual-fuel vessel, demonstrating the vessel’s capability to alternate between ammonia and diesel for its bunkering needs.

Eco-Friendly Fuel Alternative

Ammonia, synthesized by combining atmospheric nitrogen with hydrogen, stands out as a promising alternative fuel in the maritime sector’s quest to diminish emissions. Its role extends beyond a simple chemical; as a hydrogen carrier, it heralds a new era in energy transportation and marine fuel, aligning with the broader vision of energy transition.

Rigorous Testing Regime

Spanning seven weeks, the trial meticulously evaluated the vessel’s ammonia storage solutions, the intricacies of its piping systems, the efficiency of the gas fuel delivery mechanism, the performance of the retrofitted engines, and the overall seaworthiness of the ship, marking a significant step forward in sustainable maritime practices.
