Singapore has embarked on a significant initiative to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. By the end of 2025, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) plans to install at least 12,000 new EV charging points across all Housing and Development Board (HDB) carparks. This development is a key step towards making every HDB town EV-ready, signifying Singapore’s commitment to sustainable transportation.
Strategic Deployment by Regions
The project involves a tender awarded to five lead companies, responsible for deploying EV charging points in various regions across Singapore. This strategic distribution ensures a resilient EV charging network throughout the city-state. Each region has been allocated to two tenderers, and each tenderer has been awarded two regions, ensuring a comprehensive and balanced coverage.
Current Progress and Future Goals
As of the end of October 2023, about 1,600 chargers had been commissioned at 500 public carparks, with an additional 860 chargers at 240 carparks in various stages of development. The goal is to equip more than 700 HDB carparks with EV chargers by the end of 2023, covering approximately a third of the 2,000 public carparks. The first chargers under this initiative were launched in Telok Blangah and Boon Lay multi-storey carparks in February, followed by the surface-level carpark in Jurong East Street 21.
Operational Details and Future Plans
The chargers at the Jurong East Street 21 carpark, operated by Charge+, are part of the large-scale tender to install EV chargers at public carparks. The car parking spaces reserved for EV charging are conveniently located in a row, next to one another, with adjacent motorcycle parking spots to accommodate electric motorcycles as well. The deployment of EV chargers at surface-level carparks requires additional steps like trenching, cabling, and road resurfacing, making it a more complex process than installation in multi-storey carparks.
National Targets and Data Analysis
Singapore’s government targets deploying 60,000 EV charging points by 2030, with 40,000 in public car parks and 20,000 in private premises. The authorities are also analyzing data related to the usage of EV chargers to determine future locations for charger installation, ensuring the network meets the evolving needs of the community.
The introduction of EV chargers at HDB carparks represents a significant milestone in Singapore’s journey towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation ecosystem.
