Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Singapore from September 11 to 13, as part of his broader Asian tour, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore announced on Friday (Apr 12). This visit marks a significant event as it is the first such visit since Pope John Paul II stopped in Singapore in 1986.

Tour Itinerary

The Pope’s journey will begin in Indonesia, where he will stay from September 3 to 6, followed by visits to Papua New Guinea from September 6 to 9, and Timor-Leste from September 9 to 11. Singapore will be the final destination on his itinerary.

Planning and Preparations

Details of the visit are currently being finalized through discussions among the Singapore government, the Holy See, and local church officials. “More information about the papal visit will be released progressively,” the archdiocese stated, indicating ongoing preparations to accommodate the pontiff’s schedule and events.

Previous Papal Visit

The last papal visit over three decades ago by John Paul II was a brief but impactful five-hour stay, which included a mass at the National Stadium attended by thousands. This upcoming visit is anticipated to draw significant attention and participation from the local and regional Catholic community.

This visit underscores the importance of Asia in the Vatican’s global outreach efforts and is expected to address various regional religious and social issues.
