A 40-year-old married man, M Krishnan, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for beating his girlfriend to death in a nearly two-hour-long rage. The sentence, handed down by the High Court on Monday (Apr 22), is longer than the 15 to 18 years sought by the prosecution.

Culpable Homicide Charge

Krishnan pleaded guilty to one count of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, caning, or a jail term of up to 20 years with a fine or caning. He admitted to causing the death of 40-year-old Mallika Begum Rahamansa Abdul Rahman on January 17, 2019, after brutally assaulting her in a fit of rage.

Deadly Attack

The court heard that Krishnan’s attack was fueled by his anger over Ms. Mallika’s relationships with other men. His violent outburst resulted in a fatal head injury to the victim. Despite the prosecution seeking a sentence of 15 to 18 years, the High Court determined that a longer jail term was warranted due to the severity of the assault and the tragic outcome.

Violent Rage and Consequences

Krishnan’s violent behavior and subsequent conviction underscore the tragic consequences of domestic violence. The case serves as a stark reminder of the need to address and prevent abusive relationships. The High Court’s decision to impose a 20-year sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and the devastating impact on the victim’s family and loved ones.
