Nineteen people, including five gunmen, were killed in a series of attacks on police posts, churches, and a synagogue in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan. The Sunday evening assaults also left at least 16 people injured, who were subsequently hospitalized.
Period of Mourning Declared
Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim republic neighboring Chechnya, has declared three days of mourning in response to the tragic events. The coordinated attacks targeted the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala during the Orthodox festival of Pentecost.
Victims Identified
Among the victims was Orthodox priest Father Nikolai Kotelnikov, who had served in Derbent for more than 40 years. His identity was confirmed by Sergei Melikov, the head of the Republic of Dagestan.
Coordinated Attacks
The attackers struck multiple locations on Sunday night. In Derbent, gunmen attacked a church and a synagogue, impacting the ancient Jewish community residing there. In Makhachkala, Dagestan’s largest city, another church and a police post near a synagogue were also targeted.
The attacks have shocked the region and heightened security concerns, prompting authorities to investigate the motives and identities of the assailants.
