In response to threats from a media outlet supporting the Islamic State group, security measures are being significantly strengthened at Champions League football matches. The threats, which were not specific to any match, targeted the venues of the quarter-final games.

National Responses

Authorities in France and Spain have confirmed that they are ramping up security protocols. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced a “considerably reinforced” security presence for the PSG vs. Barcelona match in Paris.

Uefa’s Stance

Uefa has acknowledged the threats issued by the pro-IS media channels but has confirmed that the scheduled matches in Madrid, Paris, and London will proceed as planned. The organization emphasized the importance of safety but did not provide details on the changes to security arrangements.

Focus Matches

The threats come as two high-stakes quarter-final matches are set to take place in Madrid. Real Madrid is hosting Manchester City, and Atletico Madrid is set to face Borussia Dortmund. Both games have drawn particular attention in light of the recent threats.
