Bangkok is grappling with hazardous air pollution levels, prompting authorities to implement emergency measures to protect public health. These include the temporary closure of schools and the provision of free public transportation to reduce vehicular emissions.
School Closures
In response to escalating PM2.5 pollutant concentrations, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered the closure of several schools across the city. For instance, in Nong Khaem district, two schools were closed on January 20, 2025, with plans to reopen contingent upon improved air quality. Similarly, Wat Bangpakok School in Rat Burana district suspended classes due to deteriorating air conditions.
Free Public Transportation Initiative
To mitigate pollution levels, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has mandated free public transportation in Bangkok for a week starting January 25, 2025. This initiative encompasses buses and electric train lines, aiming to decrease the use of personal vehicles and subsequently reduce traffic-related emissions. The government will compensate operators such as BTS Group Holdings Pcl and Bangkok Expressway & Metro Pcl for their participation in this program.
Public Health Advisory
Authorities are advising residents to work from home where possible and to utilize public transportation to minimize exposure to polluted air. The BMA is also encouraging the use of face masks and has issued health warnings, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions.
