South Korea Braces for Hotter, Wetter Summer in 2025

South Korea is set to experience a summer that is both hotter and wetter than usual, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s (KMA) latest three-month outlook. The forecast indicates higher-than-average temperatures and increased rainfall from May through July, raising concerns about potential extreme weather events.

Rising Temperatures Ahead

The KMA predicts a 50% chance that temperatures in May and July will exceed historical averages, with a 40% likelihood for June. This trend is attributed to elevated sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean, which are expected to generate an anticyclone near the Korean Peninsula, leading to a high-pressure system that will drive temperatures upward.

“May is still considered spring, but as the days pass, it is possible for the month to see more summer-like temperatures,” said KMA official Lee Ji-hye.

Anticipated Increase in Rainfall

In addition to higher temperatures, the KMA anticipates heavier rainfall during the summer monsoon season, which typically begins in late June and ends in late July. The combination of hot air and moisture lingering in the atmosphere increases the chances of heavy rainfall.

“Since nationwide temperatures continue to rise overall, hot air and moisture will continuously linger in the air, which increases the chances of heavy rainfall,” Lee continued.

Potential for Extreme Weather Events

The forecast raises concerns about the possibility of extreme weather events, such as prolonged tropical nights, record-breaking heat waves, and heavy rainfall, similar to those experienced last summer. The KMA’s estimations suggest a high likelihood of Korea seeing a combination of these extreme summer weather events simultaneously.

“Though weather is always subject to change, it is evident that we witness unexpected climate changes and weather events every year,” said Professor Son Seok-woo from Seoul National University’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences during a weather seminar hosted by the KMA on May 7.

Preparing for the Season

With the anticipated rise in temperatures and increased rainfall, authorities and residents are advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of potential extreme weather events. Staying informed through official weather updates and adhering to safety guidelines will be crucial in navigating the upcoming summer season.
