Danelle Tan, the national women’s football star, has made a remarkable start to her Borussia Dortmund career by delivering a hat-trick and providing three assists during a commanding 13-0 home victory against DJK Spvgg Herten on Sunday.
Due to the ongoing renovation of their home ground, Stadion Rote Erde, Borussia Dortmund played at the temporary venue of the BVB Evonik Football Academy. In just three minutes, the 18-year-old forward capitalized on a defense-splitting pass from the back to set up Mandy Reinhardt for her first of six goals. Tan continued to shine on the left channel, assisting Marie Grothe 15 minutes later to make it 3-0.
In the 43rd minute, Tan scored her first league goal of the season, latching onto a pass from Reinhardt and slotting home with her right foot. Borussia Dortmund Frauen entered halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead, and the second half saw the floodgates open, with Tan once again playing a pivotal role.
In the 55th minute, Tan’s one-touch play set up Merle Greulich for the sixth goal, followed by Tan’s own strike at the back post just two minutes later. She completed her hat-trick on her home debut in the 64th minute with an impressive run down the left wing.
Tan’s outstanding contributions earned her the title of Player of the Match, as voted by the majority of the 250 flag-waving fans. Expressing her gratitude on social media, Tan said she was “So honored.”
With this resounding victory, BVB Frauen currently lead the fifth-tier Landesliga after two games. Tan had made her league debut in a remarkable 5-1 comeback win against SC Drolshagen on August 27.
BVB Frauen, formed in 2021, has climbed the ranks from the seventh tier, securing consecutive promotions in 2022 and 2023. In June, Danelle Tan made history by becoming the first Asian player to join the team. Also learn about Kicking Off Dreams: Football Schools for Children in Singapore.
