Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that construction for the Cross Island Line (CRL) interchange stations at Clementi and King Albert Park is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2024. The passenger service for CRL Phase 2 is expected to be operational by 2032.

Strategic Locations and Connectivity

The CRL King Albert Park interchange station will be situated along Blackmore Drive off Bukit Timah Road. In contrast, the CRL Clementi interchange station will be located near the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue West and Clementi Avenue 4. Additionally, modifications will be made to the existing King Albert Park station on the Downtown Line and the Clementi station on the East-West Line to ensure smooth transfers and connectivity to the new stations.

Contract Awards and Expertise

China Communications Construction Company has secured the contract to design and construct the King Albert Park CRL station, with a contract value of approximately S$447 million (US$326 million). Meanwhile, a joint venture between the Singapore branches of China Communications Construction Company and Sinohydro Corporation has been awarded the contract for the Clementi CRL station, valued at S$514 million.

LTA highlighted the extensive experience of China Communications Construction in providing design-and-build construction services both locally and internationally. Sinohydro Corporation also boasts a rich portfolio of infrastructure projects across the globe.

Safety and Minimizing Disruption

To ensure minimal disruption to residents, students, and motorists, phased traffic and utilities diversions will be implemented to facilitate the construction works. Given the challenging ground conditions at the two locations, earth retaining and stabilizing structures will be erected before the excavation and construction of the station structures. This approach aims to guarantee the safety and ground stability for neighboring stakeholders throughout the construction phase.

LTA emphasized its commitment to closely monitoring the works, ensuring they are executed safely and with minimal impact on nearby stakeholders and existing structures.

About the Cross Island Line

The fully underground CRL is the eighth MRT line in Singapore. It aims to serve both existing and upcoming developments in the eastern, north-eastern, and western corridors, connecting major hubs such as the Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District, and the Changi region.

Phase 2 of the CRL, unveiled in September 2022, spans approximately 15km and includes six stations: Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast, and Jurong Lake District.

LTA also mentioned that engineering studies for Phase 3 of the CRL are currently underway, with more details to be revealed upon their completion.

In conclusion, the upcoming construction of the CRL interchange stations marks a significant step in enhancing Singapore’s transportation infrastructure, ensuring greater connectivity and convenience for its residents.
