Social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, encountered a brief yet widespread service disruption on Thursday, impacting users globally. Reports of the outage quickly surfaced, affecting a significant number of users in the United States, the United Kingdom, and parts of Asia.

Outage Details

The outage, which lasted just over an hour, was first detected by Downdetector.com, a website that monitors online service interruptions. The site recorded over 47,000 reports from U.S. users experiencing difficulties accessing X and its professional counterpart, X Pro. Many users were met with a greeting message, “Welcome to X!” instead of the usual content feed.

Response and Speculation

Owned by Elon Musk, who acquired the platform for $44 billion last year, X has not yet commented on the cause of the outage. The disruption led to the hashtag #TwitterDown trending on the platform as users quickly noticed and reacted to the issue.

Platform Stability Under Musk

Since Musk’s takeover, X has faced several challenges, including a noticeable drop in advertising revenue. Additionally, the platform has been embroiled in controversies, including accusations of permitting antisemitic content alongside advertisements. These allegations have led X to initiate legal action against Media Matters for America, a left-leaning advocacy group.

Service Restoration

The outage, while brief, highlighted the platform’s vulnerability and the rapid response of its user base. Service was restored after just over an hour, allowing users to regain access to their feeds and continue their social media interactions on X.
