Czech President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala have expressed their condolences and called for national unity in the wake of this tragedy.

Horrific Attack at the Heart of Prague

The shooting began in the afternoon at the Faculty of Arts building, with the gunman targeting individuals indiscriminately in corridors and classrooms. In an attempt to escape the horror, staff and students resorted to barricading themselves and even jumping from windows. The panic and chaos were further compounded by the sound of gunfire, causing immense fear and distress among those present and nearby.

President Pavel, expressing his sorrow and frustration, emphasized the need to avoid using this incident for political gain or spreading misinformation. Prime Minister Fiala mirrored these sentiments, acknowledging the national pain and sorrow, especially poignant in the days leading up to Christmas. He announced that flags would be flown at half-mast on public buildings, and a minute’s silence would be observed at midday on Saturday.

The Investigation and the Gunman

Authorities are diligently working to understand the motive behind the attack. The gunman, identified as David Kozak, was a student at the university without a previous criminal record. However, police discovered an extensive collection of weapons and ammunition in his possession. There are indications that the attack might have been influenced by a similar incident in Russia, although this remains unconfirmed. The police are also investigating Kozak’s connection to the deaths of a young man and his two-month-old daughter found in a Prague forest.
