Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has leveled serious allegations against the Libyan coast guard, claiming interference in a crucial rescue operation in the Mediterranean Sea. The NGO, dedicated to providing medical and humanitarian aid, was in the process of rescuing over 170 individuals on perilous journeys to Europe.

Incident at Sea

During a mission on Saturday, MSF’s vessel encountered two boats in international waters: a small fiberglass boat with 28 passengers and a larger wooden vessel carrying 143 people, showing signs of distress. The organization reported that the Libyan coast guard’s arrival and subsequent maneuvers near the larger boat not only hampered the rescue efforts but also heightened the risks for the mostly Syrian refugees aboard.

MSF’s Concerns

MSF has expressed deep concern over the actions of the Libyan coast guard, suggesting such interventions undermine the safety of vulnerable individuals attempting the dangerous sea crossing to seek refuge in Europe. The NGO continues to call for safe and legal routes for refugees and migrants, emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid in the Mediterranean.
