In a dramatic turn of events, the Dali cargo ship became entangled with the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore following a catastrophic accident in March. The incident, which tragically resulted in the deaths of six individuals, also scattered approximately 4,000 tonnes of debris into the Patapsco River. Since then, the massive container ship has been stranded, draped in remnants of the bridge.

Explosive Intervention Strategy

In an effort to extricate the Dali and reopen the vital waterway, authorities have opted for a bold plan involving a series of controlled explosions. Scheduled for Monday, these explosions aim to sever the remaining sections of the bridge that currently envelop the 152-meter-long vessel. This method was chosen to minimize further damage to the structure and surrounding environment.

Operational Details

The process will involve precision cuts followed by controlled detonations, targeting the spans of the bridge directly covering the ship. This careful and calculated approach is intended to ensure the safety of the salvage crews and mitigate any additional environmental impact. Once the bridge remnants are successfully removed, the Dali will be extracted from the wreckage and returned to the Port of Baltimore, which has been closed since the accident.
