An oil spill has reached several beaches in Singapore, including those on Sentosa Island and East Coast Park, following a collision between a dredger and a stationary bunker vessel at Pasir Panjang Terminal.
Beach Closures and Restrictions
Authorities have announced the closure of the beachfront at East Coast Park from area B to H until further notice to facilitate clean-up operations. Additionally, the jetty and Rocky Shore at Labrador Nature Reserve will be closed.
Impact on Sentosa Beaches
While Sentosa’s beaches at Palawan, Siloso, and Tanjong remain open to the public, swimming and sea activities are currently prohibited to ensure safety.
Cause of the Spill
The oil spill originated on Friday when a Netherlands-flagged dredger collided with a stationary Singapore-flagged bunker vessel at Pasir Panjang Terminal. The impact caused oil from the bunker vessel’s damaged cargo tank to leak into the water, leading to the widespread contamination now affecting various coastal areas.
