The organizers of Paris 2024 have assured that the parliamentary elections called by French President Emmanuel Macron will not hinder the preparations for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, the mayor of Paris has expressed concerns, calling the timing of the elections, less than a month before the Games, “extremely unsettling.”

Dates and Scale of the Games

The summer Olympics are scheduled from July 26 to August 11, featuring 10,500 athletes competing in 329 events. The Paralympics will follow from August 28 to September 8, with 4,400 athletes participating in 549 events. A total of 206 countries will be represented at the Olympics, and 184 countries at the Paralympics, with over 15 million tourists expected to visit Paris during this period.

Main Venues and Locations

The primary athletics events will be hosted at the Stade de France, located on the northern outskirts of Paris. Additionally, there will be 15 Olympic and 11 Paralympic venues in the city center. Notable locations include the Pont d’Iena for cycling events, and the Hotel de Ville and Les Invalides as the start and finish points for the marathon.

Citywide Adjustments

During the Games, central Paris venues will be restricted to the public and will have extensive traffic limitations to accommodate the events.

Potential Challenges

Swimming events are planned to take place in the Seine River in central Paris. However, there is a contingency plan, as heavy rainfall could impact water quality, potentially leading to delays or cancellations of some swimming events.

Paris is actively addressing these logistical and environmental challenges to ensure a successful hosting of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
