An Air Europa flight from Madrid to Montevideo was forced to make an emergency landing at a Brazilian airport after encountering severe turbulence, the airline reported.

Approximately 40 passengers, mostly with minor injuries, were transported to hospitals in Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte state, following the emergency diversion early on Monday. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner departed Madrid at 11:57 PM on Sunday, carrying 325 people, and was scheduled to arrive in Montevideo, Uruguay, early on Monday. However, at 2:32 AM, Flight UX045 requested an emergency landing at Natal airport in north-eastern Brazil, 4,000 km away from its intended destination, according to Zurich Airport Brazil.
