Court Charges Against Ng Siak Hai

Ng Siak Hai, an 87-year-old founding shareholder of the seafood restaurant chain JUMBO Group and the founder of Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh, was charged in court on Wednesday (July 10) in connection with a car accident that resulted in the death of a 72-year-old passenger and the grievous injury of another.

Details of the Incident

The charges stem from an accident that occurred on the evening of November 1, 2022, along Nassim Road towards Tanglin Road. Ng was allegedly driving without due care and attention, which led to him losing control of his vehicle. The car veered to the left, collided with a tree by the side of the road, and subsequently overturned.

Consequences of the Accident

The accident claimed the life of 72-year-old Mr. Ng Thit Hung, who was seated in the front passenger seat. Another passenger, 75-year-old Tan Teck Soon, sustained grievous injuries. The tragic event has led to two charges against Ng: causing death by driving without due care and attention and causing grievous hurt by the same means.

Court Proceedings and Potential Penalties

Ng Siak Hai appeared in court on Wednesday and was granted bail set at S$15,000. He indicated his intention to plead guilty, with a date set in August for him to do so. If convicted, Ng faces significant penalties. For causing death by driving without due care and attention, he could be sentenced to up to three years in jail, fined up to S$10,000, or both. For causing grievous hurt, he could be jailed for up to two years, fined up to S$5,000, or both. Additionally, he could face a driving ban.
