Emirates to End Singapore-Melbourne Flights After Decades of Service

Dubai-based airline Emirates has announced its decision to cease its long-standing flights between Singapore and Melbourne. This move comes just five years after the airline terminated its Singapore-Brisbane route in 2019, further reducing its direct services between Singapore and Australia.

Request to Terminate Route Submitted to Singapore Authorities

On August 8, the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) confirmed that Emirates had formally requested to terminate its operations on the Singapore-Melbourne route. Emirates has been flying this route since 1996, marking the end of nearly three decades of service.

Pending Final Decision on Termination Date

The final date for the cessation of flights is yet to be determined. Emirates is awaiting the final assessment from the CCCS regarding the impact of being released from its capacity commitments as part of an alliance with Australian carrier Qantas. Once the assessment is complete, the airline will finalize the termination date for its Singapore-Melbourne services.

Emirates to Continue Codeshare Services to Australia

Although Emirates will no longer operate its own aircraft between Singapore and Australia following this termination, the airline has assured passengers that it will continue offering codeshare flights. These shared services, operated through its partnership with Qantas, will connect Singapore to key Australian cities including Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney.

Shift in Emirates’ Australia Strategy

The discontinuation of the Singapore-Melbourne route signals a shift in Emirates’ strategy for Australia. By continuing its codeshare flights, the airline aims to maintain a presence in the Australian market while streamlining its direct operations.
