A Global Celebration of Skills
WorldSkills Lyon 2024, taking place from September 10 to 15, 2024, will bring together 1,400 young competitors from over 70 countries. Often referred to as the “Olympics of vocational skills,” this event celebrates excellence in technical and vocational training. The competition showcases 62 skill areas ranging from information technology to manufacturing, arts, and crafts, with competitors demonstrating their expertise in front of a global audience.
Singapore’s Biggest Contingent Yet
This year marks a historic moment for Singapore, which is sending its largest-ever contingent to the competition. A total of 35 young Singaporeans will compete across 30 different skill areas, from cloud computing to industrial design. These skilled youths have undergone rigorous training through initiatives like the Peak Performance Training Camp, where they not only hone their technical abilities but also work on mental toughness and team cohesion.
Singapore’s commitment to technical education and skills development is evident in its strong participation. The country sees WorldSkills as an opportunity to showcase the nation’s talent on an international platform while learning from others to further develop its vocational training programs.
Beyond the Competition: Cultural Exchange and Learning
One of the key elements of WorldSkills Lyon is the “One School, One Country” cultural exchange program. Singaporean competitors will engage with local students in France, sharing insights and experiences from their journey, contributing to a broader understanding of diverse cultures.
Minister for Education, Chan Chun Sing, who spoke at the sending-off ceremony, encouraged participants to focus on personal growth and cross-cultural learning in addition to their competitive pursuits. He emphasized the importance of bringing back valuable lessons and ideas to improve Singapore’s technical training landscape.
Conclusion
WorldSkills Lyon 2024 represents more than just a competition—it’s a global stage where the next generation of skilled workers can showcase their talent, learn from others, and elevate their expertise. For Singapore, this year’s event is a landmark occasion as it sends its largest-ever team, ready to represent the nation with pride and ambition.
