Wildfires in Portugal Claim Lives of Seven, Including Three Firefighters
At least seven people, including three firefighters, have lost their lives as wildfires continue to devastate parts of Portugal. The country has been battling the flames since the weekend, with the most severe fires reported in the northern and central regions, where temperatures have soared above 30°C (86°F).
Firefighters Die Battling Blaze in Tábua
The three fallen firefighters—two women and a man—died while fighting a wildfire in Tábua, located in Coimbra, central Portugal. The civil protection authority confirmed their deaths as the fire spread rapidly in the region. Over 5,000 firefighters have been deployed nationwide in an effort to control the wildfires.
Injuries and Damage Mount as Fires Spread
Hospitals in the affected areas have reported treating numerous people for burns, respiratory issues, and other fire-related injuries. At least 12 firefighters have been injured in the efforts, with two in serious condition. The fires have also led to the destruction of dozens of homes, forcing evacuations and displacing families.
Major Roads Shut as Fires Disrupt Transportation
Authorities have shut down several motorways, including the major route connecting Lisbon and Porto, as the fires continue to spread. The road closures, combined with the destruction of property, have severely disrupted daily life in many regions.
