Former Singapore Minister S Iswaran Sentenced to 12 Months’ Jail for Corruption

Former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after being found guilty of obtaining gifts and valuables worth approximately S$403,300 (US$313,200) over a span of seven years. The 62-year-old pleaded guilty last week, averting what would have been a lengthy trial involving 56 prosecution witnesses.

Sentencing Follows Plea Deal After Guilty Plea

Iswaran’s guilty plea, entered on the first day of his trial, cut short the proceedings. His defense lawyer, Davinder Singh, had advocated for a lighter sentence of no more than eight weeks, while the prosecution, led by Deputy Attorney-General Tai Wei Shyong, sought a term of six to seven months. Ultimately, Justice Hoong imposed a 12-month jail term, citing aggravating factors including Iswaran’s high-ranking position and the impact on public trust.

Corruption Case Centered on Gifts from Businessmen

The charges stemmed from Iswaran accepting gifts and valuables from two businessmen, whom he considered friends. The corruption case highlighted the total duration of his offenses, during which he held a senior government position, raising concerns about the erosion of public trust.

Jail Term Deferred at Iswaran’s Request

Iswaran’s legal team successfully requested that the jail term be deferred to October 7, allowing him to surrender at the State Courts at 4 p.m. on that day. His sentencing marks a significant moment in Singapore’s anti-corruption efforts, underscoring the accountability expected from public officials.
