On October 5, 2024, Singapore’s iconic Turf Club hosted its final horse races, marking the end of a 182-year legacy. Thousands of racegoers gathered at the Kranji venue to witness this historic occasion, with the event culminating in the 100th Grand Singapore Gold Cup. The day featured 10 races, each one paying tribute to the club’s rich history, which dates back to 1842 when it was founded by Scottish merchant William Henry Macleod Read.

The decision to close the Singapore Turf Club was announced in 2023, as part of a broader plan to redevelop the 124-hectare site for housing and other needs. While many attendees expressed sadness over the club’s closure, there was also a sense of understanding regarding the country’s evolving land use needs. The Turf Club site will be officially handed over to the government by March 2027.

This final day drew not only local spectators but also international visitors from countries such as Hong Kong and Japan, who traveled to bid farewell to Singapore’s horse racing tradition. The atmosphere was both celebratory and nostalgic, as punters and fans looked back on the long-standing cultural significance of the Turf Club.
