UN Condemns Deadly Strike in Southern Lebanon
An Israeli airstrike targeting municipal buildings in the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh has resulted in the deaths of 16 people, including Mayor Ahmad Kahil. The attack, which took place during a council meeting on Wednesday, has been condemned by the UN’s special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, who described the killings as “alarming” and called for adherence to international humanitarian law.
Municipal Staff Among the Victims
Among the casualties were at least five municipal staff members who were coordinating aid efforts for civilians still residing in the conflict zone. The deadly strike marked the most severe attack on a Lebanese government building since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah escalated two weeks ago.
Fears for Lebanon’s State Infrastructure
The attack has heightened concerns over the safety of Lebanon’s state infrastructure, raising alarms about the potential targeting of key government facilities amid the ongoing conflict. Hennis-Plasschaert reiterated that any violations of international humanitarian law are “completely unacceptable,” urging all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure.
As violence continues to escalate in the region, international bodies are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further humanitarian crises.
