Cyclists Penalized in Traffic Police and LTA Enforcement Operations
A total of 37 cyclists were fined for violating group size rules during enforcement operations held on September 28 and October 13, according to a joint statement by the Traffic Police (TP) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on October 18. The fines were issued as part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with road safety regulations for cyclists in Singapore.
Group Size Limits for Road Cyclists
Current regulations in Singapore restrict cycling groups to five individuals riding in single file or up to 10 cyclists riding two abreast on roads with more than one lane. These rules are designed to enhance road safety and reduce congestion, particularly on busier roads.
During the enforcement operations, TP and LTA officers not only fined violators but also engaged cyclists to raise awareness of the rules and guidelines governing cycling on roads.
Increased Penalties for Rule Violations
Cyclists found guilty of flouting the group size rule are subject to a $150 fine, which was doubled from $75 on January 1, 2022, as part of efforts to promote safer cycling practices. The increased fine also applies to other violations, such as failing to stop at red lights, cycling on expressways, or riding two abreast on single-lane roads or during bus lane operational hours.
These enforcement operations highlight the authorities’ commitment to maintaining road safety and ensuring that cyclists adhere to the established rules.
