Upgraded Fleet Debuts in Annual Crisis Simulation Exercise
Changi Airport has introduced three new types of search and rescue vessels to strengthen its firefighting and emergency response capabilities at sea. These vessels were deployed for the first time during the airport’s annual crisis simulation exercise on October 17, which involved nearly 20 agencies and over 200 participants.
New Vessels to Replace Aging Fleet
The newly deployed vessels – Landing Craft, Command Craft, and Fast Craft – will replace older models that are nearing the end of their operational life by the end of this year, according to Changi Airport Group (CAG). These new crafts boast a maximum speed of 40 knots, a significant upgrade from the 20 knots of their predecessors, which included hovercrafts and inflatable boats.
Boosting Emergency Capabilities
The vessels will be operated by CAG’s Airport Emergency Service (AES) team, responsible for managing incidents such as aircraft crashes, firefighting, rescue operations, and threats involving dangerous goods, bombs, or hazardous materials. The sea rescue base, situated off the waters of Changi Airport, is specifically designed to handle aviation accidents occurring at sea or in nearby waters.
The addition of these faster, more advanced vessels will enhance Changi Airport’s preparedness for maritime incidents, ensuring a quicker and more efficient response to potential crises at sea.
