Officials Race to Tow Burning Ship Off India Coast to Avert Ecological Disaster

A Singapore‑flagged cargo vessel, MV Wan Hai 503, remains ablaze off the Kerala coast, prompting a massive rescue and salvage operation spearheaded by Indian authorities in a bid to prevent an environmental catastrophe.

Fire on Board and Initial Rescue

The fire erupted on June 9 due to an under‑deck container explosion, quickly engulfing the MV Wan Hai 503 about 44 nautical miles off Kerala’s coast. The crew’s swift evacuation, assisted by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, ensured 18 sailors were rescued; however, four remain missing amid ongoing firefighting efforts.

Tow Operation to Prevent Disaster

With active flames persisting near fuel tanks and internal decks, the ship poses a significant threat of fuel leakage or further explosions. On June 11, the Indian Coast Guard, supported by the Directorate General of Shipping and the ship owner’s salvage crew, connected a towline to the vessel and began towing it away from shore — 42 nautical miles southeast of Beypore — aiming to reduce risk to coastlines and marine ecosystems.

Large‑Scale Maritime Response

The operation involves an extensive maritime deployment: five Coast Guard ships, two surveillance aircraft, a helicopter, and tugboat Water Lily. In parallel, Indian Air Force assets are on standby to assist firefighting and monitor potential hazards.

Environmental Stakes

Carrying over 120,000 metric tonnes of fuel and hundreds of containers—including hazardous materials like pesticides, chemicals, and microplastics—the vessel’s proximity to shore creates a clear ecological hazard. Officials warn that drifting debris or leakage could damage coastal ecosystems and fisheries along the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and even Sri Lanka.

Next Steps and Ongoing Investigation

Salvage teams are closely monitoring onboard fire suppression and structural integrity while towing. Investigation into the root cause of the container explosion continues. Authorities prioritize extinguishing internal fires, ensuring no fuel leak, and bringing the missing crew members home safely.

India’s rapid and coordinated multi-agency response underscores the gravity of maritime emergencies near busy coastlines. Whether the tow succeeds without incident will be critical in determining how effectively the nation can manage complex maritime disasters.
