Rising Starvation Threat in Rakhine

A United Nations report has raised the alarm over dire conditions in Myanmar’s conflict-ravaged Rakhine State, where residents—particularly Rohingya and other ethnic communities—are facing possible acute famine. The UN Development Programme warned of a “perfect storm” brewing, warning that unless urgent action is taken, the region could descend into widespread starvation.

Blockades, Economic Collapse, and Hyperinflation

Rakhine is being squeezed by a heartbreaking convergence of crises. Ongoing conflict has disrupted trade and blocked vital supplies entering the region. Declining food production and soaring prices—driven by hyperinflation—have left locals without income or access to basic necessities. Humanitarian aid is constrained by both insecurity and government-imposed restrictions.

Voices from the Ground

Aung Ko Ko, the executive director of Mosaic Myanmar, underscored the severity of the crisis:

If food supplies continue to be blocked, Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya communities could face famine in the coming months.
First-hand testimonies corroborate this urgency, with Rohingya individuals recounting extreme food shortages and an inability to work, fish, farm, or even move freely. Many survivors now depend on begging for survival.

WFP Cuts Compound the Crisis

The humanitarian situation is compounded by reduced international assistance. The World Food Programme announced that, due to severe funding shortfalls, food aid to over one million people in Myanmar will be cut starting April. With more than 15 million individuals facing daily food shortages and 2.3 million at emergency hunger levels, the reductions pose a life-threatening risk for vulnerable populations.

A Looming Humanitarian Catastrophe

The combined impact of conflict, economic collapse, and dwindling aid is pushing Rakhine toward a catastrophic food crisis. Without immediate intervention—including lifted access restrictions, increased aid, and economic relief—many communities may face hunger-related deaths in the near future.
