Curfew Imposed in Ladakh After Deadly Statehood Protests

Authorities in India’s union territory of Ladakh have imposed a curfew and security restrictions in the wake of violent protests that left at least four people dead and dozens injured. The unrest erupted as locals demonstrated over demands for statehood, greater autonomy, and protections for tribal areas.

What Sparked the Violence

The protests were driven by long-standing grievances over Ladakh’s political status. Since 2019, when the Indian government reorganised Jammu & Kashmir and carved out Ladakh as a union territory without an elected legislature, local groups have pushed for a return to more self-rule.

Tensions escalated after activist Sonam Wangchuk, known for his environmental and constitutional advocacy, ended a hunger strike amid pressure. Protesters in Leh clashed with security forces, threw stones, and set fire to a BJP party office and a police van.

Authorities say the unrest also involved attacks on government buildings, and security forces responded with tear gas, plastic bullets, and warning shots.

The Government’s Response

In reaction to the upheaval:

  • A curfew was declared in Leh and other sensitive areas; shops, businesses, and public services were closed.
  • Section 144, barring assemblies of more than five people, was imposed in Leh and Kargil districts to prevent further gatherings.
  • Over 50 arrests have been made in connection with the violence.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs said the violence followed “provocative statements” by leaders and that security forces had to act to restore order.
  • Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, Kavinder Gupta, characterized the unrest as potentially part of a broader conspiracy and pledged a full investigation.

Casualties, Damage & Tensions

  • At least four protesters are confirmed dead and 80 others injured, including critically wounded individuals.
  • A reported 30 police and paramilitary personnel sustained injuries in clashes.
  • Streets in Leh bore evidence of damage: burnt vehicles, broken windows, debris, and buildings vandalised, including the BJP office.

What Protesters Want

The demands of the movement include:

  1. Full statehood for Ladakh—converting it from a union territory to a state with legislative powers.
  2. Inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which grants autonomy and protections for tribal areas.
  3. Job quotas, safeguarding land, cultural identity, and constitutional protections.

Activists point out that over recent years many protests in Ladakh had been peaceful, and say this violent turn reflects growing frustration.

Challenges Ahead & Political Stakes

  • Talks scheduled: The government plans a fresh round of discussion with Ladakh representatives on October 6 to address grievances.
  • Trust deficit: Repeated promises over autonomy and constitutional status have left many locals skeptical.
  • Security risk: Ladakh borders China, making unrest in the region strategically sensitive.
  • Political blame game: National and regional parties are trading accusations over handling the crisis.
