Queenstown, one of Singapore’s oldest estates, is set to undergo a significant transformation over the next five to ten years. The Housing Board (HDB) unveiled plans that encompass new parks, wellness landscapes, and the preservation of the town’s rich heritage.
Preserving Tanglin Halt’s Legacy
Central to the rejuvenation is the repurposing of blocks in the Tanglin Halt estate, originally developed by the Singapore Improvement Trust. While specific details remain under wraps, this move aims to retain the town’s historical essence. The redevelopment of Tanglin Halt has already begun, with several blocks being demolished to pave the way for the new Tanglin Halt Neighbourhood Centre.
New Housing Developments
The upcoming Build-To-Order (BTO) project, Tanglin Halt Cascadia, is set to launch in October. This project will introduce 970 three- and four-room units to Commonwealth Drive.
Green Spaces and Wellness Landscapes
Residents can look forward to enhanced greenery and wellness landscapes. The King’s Road Park, for instance, will offer a serene environment with naturalistic planting, dog runs, playgrounds, and elder-friendly fitness equipment. Additionally, therapeutic gardens, designed to boost mental well-being, will be introduced in housing projects and parks, like the one planned for Commonwealth Heights by 2027.
Enhanced Connectivity and Infrastructure
To foster better connectivity, Queenstown will be linked to neighbouring towns through new cycling paths. Residents can also anticipate improved walking and cycling experiences with the introduction of social nodes, which will feature play areas, exercise stations, and outdoor gardens.
Catering to an Aging Population
Given Queenstown’s aging demographic, the rejuvenation plans emphasize elder-friendly features. Upgrades to the six existing neighbourhood centres will include sheltered seating areas and elder-friendly pavements. Furthermore, dementia-friendly features, such as pedestrian wayfinding lines, will be incorporated into new public housing developments.
A Bright Future Ahead
Queenstown’s transformation is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to blending the old with the new. As the town gears up for its makeover, residents can anticipate a harmonious blend of heritage, modern amenities, and green spaces, ensuring Queenstown remains a cherished home for generations to come.
