Singapore Halts Poultry Imports from Bird Flu-Affected Regions Globally

Singapore has taken proactive measures in response to the recent outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in several global regions. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has announced the suspension of raw poultry and poultry product imports from affected areas in Japan, the United States, Canada, France, Belgium, and Germany.

Widespread Impact of Avian Influenza

The suspension specifically targets regions that have reported cases of the H5N1 strain. These include four Japanese prefectures – Saga, Ibaraki, Saitama, and Kagoshima – and select regions in other affected countries. The decision follows reports of bird flu detections on farms across these regions, with media sources like NHK in Japan reporting significant bird culling measures, such as the planned extermination of approximately 40,000 birds in Saga Prefecture.

SFA’s Preventive Actions

In its circular to meat and egg traders dated December 8th, the SFA emphasized the temporary nature of this restriction. However, it clarified that heat-treated poultry products, which adhere to the guidelines set by the World Organisation for Animal Health for AI virus inactivation, will not be subjected to this import halt. Heat-treated poultry typically refers to various processed poultry products.

Consumer Safety Advice

Amidst concerns over the bird flu, SFA has issued advice to consumers to ensure their safety. The agency urges thorough cooking of all poultry products and recommends washing hands with soap post-handling of raw poultry. Additionally, it advises travelers to avoid contact with wild birds and live poultry while overseas, minimizing the risk of contracting the bird flu.

Conclusion

Singapore’s decision to suspend poultry imports from affected regions is a precautionary step to protect public health and prevent the spread of the H5N1 avian influenza. This move underscores the country’s commitment to food safety and the well-being of its citizens. As the situation evolves, the SFA is likely to continue monitoring developments and make necessary adjustments to its policies.
