Changi Airport, renowned for its commitment to sustainability, has embarked on an ambitious project to install a vast solar photovoltaic (PV) system across its premises. This initiative, set to be completed by early 2025, will mark the installation of Singapore’s most extensive single-site rooftop solar PV system.

A Partnership for the Future

In collaboration with Keppel, a leader in asset management, Changi Airport Group (CAG) aims to harness the power of the sun to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. The project involves outfitting the roofs of passenger terminals, along with airfield and cargo buildings operated by CAG, with state-of-the-art solar panels.

Expansive Solar Coverage

The project’s scale is unprecedented, with an additional installation planned for a 4-hectare area within the airfield, carefully positioned to avoid interference with aircraft operations. This strategic placement follows recommendations from a 2022 panel of international experts advocating for the utilization of open spaces within the airfield for solar energy generation.

A Sustainable Milestone

Under the stewardship of Keppel, the solar PV systems at Changi Airport will boast a remarkable generation capacity of 43MW-peak (MWp). The rooftop installations alone will contribute 38MWp, while the airfield system will add another 5MWp. This significant solar energy capacity underscores Changi Airport’s dedication to leading the charge in airport sustainability and renewable energy adoption.
