An alarming incident occurred on a Batik Air flight from South East Sulawesi to Jakarta on January 25, where both the pilot and co-pilot fell asleep, leading to navigation errors during the 2-hour and 35-minute journey. The flight was carrying 153 passengers and four attendants, who fortunately remained unharmed.
The National Transportation Safety Committee’s preliminary findings revealed that the flight crew was unresponsive for approximately 28 minutes. In response to this serious breach of flight safety, the Indonesian Transport Ministry has issued a strong reprimand to Batik Air, emphasizing the need for stricter adherence to aircrew rest policies.
To prevent future occurrences, a comprehensive investigation and review of night-time flight operations across Indonesia will be conducted, focusing on the management of fatigue risks for all flight operators. The pilots involved in the incident have been temporarily relieved of their duties pending further investigation.
